Moomba Festival is Melbourne’s longest-running and most iconic community festival, held annually over the Labour Day long weekend. Established in 1955, Moomba celebrates the city’s culture, diversity, and community spirit through a large program of free entertainment along the Yarra River and surrounding city parks.

The festival is best known for its colourful Moomba Parade, which features floats, performers, cultural groups, and community organisations showcasing Melbourne’s multicultural identity. Another major highlight is the Moomba Monarch ceremony, a long-standing tradition where public figures are crowned as symbolic festival leaders.

Held primarily in Alexandra Gardens and Birrarung Marr, Moomba includes carnival rides, sideshow games, food stalls, live music stages, skateboarding competitions, water sports events on the Yarra River, and fireworks displays each night. Families attend in large numbers due to the festival’s free access and wide range of activities designed for all ages.

Moomba also features sporting events such as the Moomba Masters water skiing competition, attracting international athletes. Street performers, art installations, roving entertainment, and cultural showcases add to the lively atmosphere across the river precinct.

The festival plays a significant role in Melbourne’s civic identity, bringing together residents and visitors for a shared celebration of community and culture. Its combination of tradition, entertainment, and public participation has made Moomba one of Australia’s most beloved urban festivals.
